Christopher S. “Kip” Bateman
Following a long career in public service, Kip Bateman is currently a member of the New Jersey State Senate. He served as a member of the Branchburg Township Committee from 1983 to 1988, during which time he served as Mayor in 1986. From 1988 to 1994, he served on the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, serving as both Deputy Director and Director. In 1994, Kip was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly. He served as Assistant Majority Whip (1994-95), Majority Whip (1996), Chairman of the Assembly Banking and Insurance Committee (1996-2001), Assistant Republican Whip (2002-2003) and Assistant Republican Leader (2004-2005).
Following his seven consecutive terms in the Assembly, Kip was elected to the New Jersey State Senate in 2007. In the Senate, he serves as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Senate Environmental and Energy Committee, and the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee. He has also served as the Senate Republican Deputy Conference Leader. Senator Bateman has sponsored numerous laws including reducing auto insurance premium costs for policyholders, allowing tax filers to contribute a portion of their income tax refund to support the Drug Abuse Education Fund (DARE) program, and creating a grant program which supplies thermal imaging cameras to fire departments and companies through the State.
In addition to his Senatorial duties, Mr. Bateman presently serves as the Municipal Prosecutor in the Township of Bridgewater as well as in the Township of Branchburg. He has previously served as the Municipal Prosecutor for the Boroughs of Bound Brook, Peapack & Gladstone, Rocky Hill and Somerville, as well as for the Townships of Hillsborough and Montgomery.
Prior to becoming a member of his current law firm, Senator Bateman and his wife, Susan, established Bateman & Bateman in Somerville, New Jersey, attorneys at law specializing in real estate, land use, banking, and criminal defense.
