KITCHEN CONVERSATION WITH FORMER NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR DON DiFRANCESCO & LEGENDARY POLITICAL JOURNALIST NICK ACOCELLA (1943-2020) AS THEY MADE BUCATINI WITH GRAPE TOMATOES, ONIONS & HERBS [Aired on NJTV’s “Pasta & Politics”: July 2, 2020]

Topics include life in both the New Jersey Assembly and Senate and serving as Senate President and Acting Governor at the same time. They also discuss the changing tactics of campaigning.

Nick Acocella enjoyed an eclectic career at the nexus of politics, sports and journalism. He was a huge baseball fan and wrote more than 20 books, including The Book of Baseball Lineups, but he was equally passionate about NJ politics which he viewed as an endlessly fascinating clash of personalities. He was known as “the inveterate keeper of all things in Hudson County” and had an unconquerable curious spirit with a hunger to understand and explain the inner workings of New Jersey politics. For more than 20 years, Nick edited the original statewide newsletter, Politifax, which delivered political goings-on in a chatty tone. Michael Aron, NJTV’s Chief Political Correspondent, described Nick as “one of the icons of New Jersey political journalism”.

In addition to putting out the Politifax newsletter every week, Nick Acocella combined his two passions–Italian food and politics–for a deliciously new kind of talk show and hosted his own television show for several years on NJTV called Pasta & Politics. Political figures, including New Jersey Senate Presidents, Assembly speakers and minority leaders, and former Governors, bantered with him while attempting to cook up their favorite classic Italian dish. Nick had been battling cancer for about six months, and he died peacefully on June 21, 2020 at his home in Hoboken–just a couple of weeks prior to the airing of this show with Governor DiFrancesco on July 2, 2020.

Gov. DiFrancesco had great fun with Nick on the day this episode was taped and will carry with him fond memories of the precious time spent with him. Don has lost a great friend, as have so many others who had encountered Nick’s gentlemanly mien and love of all things political. Nick will be missed by all, but never forgotten.
