Gov. Chris Christie is facing the challenge of running New Jersey after a crisis — Hurricane Sandy. Former Gov. Donald DiFrancesco knows about that because he ran the state during and after 9/11. While the circumstances are different, both events had a major impact on the Garden State and required immediate and long-term action. DiFrancesco told NJ Today Managing Editor Mike Schneider that Christie has done a “terrific” job in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. He also said he, along with other Republicans, are pleased that Christie is running for reelection with Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.

DiFrancesco gives Christie an A+ for his job after Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey, but said even before the storm, Christie has been the face of New Jersey, traveling throughout the country.

Attorney Richard Pompelio was interviewed for an article that appeared in the August 13, 2012 edition of the New Jersey Law Journal. The new victim’s rights law, Alex DeCroce’s Law, was recently passed by the New Jersey legislature and will take effect on October 6, 2012. It supplements the crime victim’s bill of rights adopted in 1985.

Attorney Richard Pompelio, who founded the New Jersey Crime Victims Law Center and is Of Counsel at this law firm, drafted the legislation five years ago with input from prosecutors, defense attorneys and victims’ advocates. The legislation addresses an ongoing legal issue for victims who want a legal voice in criminal proceedings, namely standing to file motions and to have a legal voice in sentencing proceedings. The new law gives victims standing to file motions or to present arguments on a motion filed by someone else in order to enforce their rights. ALso, they will have the right to consult with the prosecution before a plea deal can be finalized and the prosecutor must inform the court and disclose whether the victim approves of the pea deal. Says Richard Pompelio as quoted in the article, “Now judges know I can file a motion and they have to hear me.”
